multinational corporations.
As a journalist, he has published dozens of features for national and
regional publications. In
addition to his work as a professional writer, Derek is a skilled public
speaker who regularly delivers presentations and seminars in English and
Spanish to audiences across the globe.
His first book, NEW
WORLD ORDER, is a timely collection of stories that takes readers on a
tour of the world as America’s military-industrial complex reels into a
new century. The book was
selected to launch the Autumn House Press fiction series.
According to the publisher, “these eleven stories turn our
attention outward, to a world where our role as Americans is no longer
as clear and secure as it once seemed.”
Derek was educated at
The University of Michigan, where he studied with writers Nicholas
Delbanco, Charles Baxter, and the esteemed literary
critic, John W. Aldridge.
He has been the recipient of many awards, including the University of
Michigan’s prestigious Jule and Avery Hopwood Award in Creative Writing,
which he won three times.
The son of an Irish
father and a Puerto Rican mother, Derek speaks fluent Spanish and has a
deep interest in Latino culture and international issues. He lives in
Michigan with his wife and son, and is currently at work on a novel.
